A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
