Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
